Walk into a tattoo studio and you have two pricing tracks: flash (pre-designed pieces) and custom (designed for you). The difference is significant and worth understanding.
What is flash
Pre-drawn designs the artist already created and is happy to put on multiple clients. Often displayed on physical sheets or digital portfolios marked "available." The design is fixed; you choose the size and placement. Often offered at a discounted "flash day" rate.
What is custom
A design created specifically for you, based on your references, ideas, body, and conversation with the artist. Includes consultation time, drawing time, revisions, and execution. The design is yours — you are the only person to ever wear it.
Why custom costs more
- Consultation time (30–90 minutes, often unpaid for the consult itself)
- Drawing time (2–8 hours, depending on complexity)
- Revision rounds (some artists include 1–2, charge for more)
- The artist commits to not reproducing it for other clients
- The session itself is usually longer because the design is more elaborate
Typical pricing impact: custom is 30–50% more than equivalent-sized flash from the same artist.
When flash makes sense
- You love a specific flash piece exactly as drawn
- You want a quick first tattoo without big commitment
- You're on a tight budget
- You want to be in-and-out the same day
- The artist offers a flash sheet of their signature style and you love it
When custom makes sense
- You have a specific vision
- You want it to fit your body specifically
- You want the piece to be unique to you
- Larger or more elaborate projects (sleeves, back pieces)
- You want a particular artist's interpretation of your concept
Hybrid approach: pick a flash piece you love and ask the artist to customize one or two elements. Some artists offer this; some do not (their flash is their flash). Always ask.
Cost examples
- 3-inch flash piece: $200–$400
- 3-inch custom: $300–$600
- 6-inch flash piece: $400–$900
- 6-inch custom: $600–$1,500
- Sleeve flash composition: rarely offered as flash
- Sleeve custom: $4,000–$15,000 total
Why "free design" is usually a red flag
If a studio promises "free custom design" without a deposit, the design is probably going to be rushed or copied from somewhere. Real custom work involves real design time, and that time gets compensated. A deposit-based commitment ensures the artist actually invests in your piece.
