Cover-Ups & Removal

Laser Tattoo Removal: Cost, Process, and What to Expect

The honest guide to laser tattoo removal — how it works, what it costs, how long it takes, and the realistic outcomes.

Laser removal is the only way to actually get rid of a tattoo (not cover it). It works, but it is slow, expensive, and uncomfortable. Here is the realistic picture.

How it works

A specialized laser fires precise wavelengths of light into the skin, targeting tattoo ink particles. The energy breaks the particles into smaller pieces that your immune system can carry away. The skin stays intact; the ink gradually clears between sessions.

Sessions and timeline

  • Sessions: 8–15 typical, 20+ for very stubborn pieces
  • Spacing: 6–8 weeks between sessions (skin needs to fully recover)
  • Total timeline: 12–24 months from start to clear
  • Each session: 5–30 minutes of actual lasering, plus prep and aftercare

Cost

Pricing depends on size and clinic:

  • Small piece (under 2 inches): $75–$200 per session, $600–$2,500 total
  • Medium piece (2–6 inches): $200–$400 per session, $2,000–$5,000 total
  • Large piece (sleeve, full back): $400–$800+ per session, $5,000–$20,000 total
  • Most clinics offer multi-session packages at a discount

What removes well vs poorly

  • Black ink: removes the best — black absorbs all wavelengths
  • Red ink: removes well
  • Blue and green: tough; need specific wavelengths, may take more sessions
  • Yellow and white: hardest; sometimes never fully clear
  • Multicolor: longest timeline because the laser cycles through wavelengths

Newer "Picosecond" lasers (PicoSure, PicoWay) work in fewer sessions than older Q-switched lasers. If a clinic only offers older tech, find one with Pico.

Pain

Most clients describe laser as more intense than getting the tattoo — sharper, like hot rubber bands snapping against skin. But each shot is brief. Topical numbing cream and ice help significantly. Sessions are short, so it is over fast.

Aftercare per session

  • Cold compress immediately
  • Antibiotic ointment for 3–5 days
  • Keep covered and clean while it heals
  • No sun on the treated area for 4 weeks per session
  • Some blistering and frosting is normal — do not pop blisters

Outcomes

Most tattoos clear to 90–95% — meaning a faint ghost may remain visible up close. Complete clearance is possible but not guaranteed. The result depends on ink type, depth, skin tone, and the laser used. Set realistic expectations: significant fading, possible full clearance, possible visible trace.

Choosing a clinic

  • Look for medical-grade lasers (PicoSure, PicoWay, Enlighten)
  • Operator is a board-certified dermatologist or trained NP — not a tattoo artist with a laser
  • Before/after photos of completed removals
  • Honest about how many sessions you will need
  • Patch tests offered before committing
