Tattoo Deposits, Cancellations, and Booking Etiquette

How tattoo deposits work, why they're non-refundable, and the booking etiquette that keeps your artist on your side.

Every artist asks for a deposit. Most clients accept that without really understanding why — and most of the friction around deposits comes from that gap. Here is what the deposit actually pays for and how to navigate the booking process without burning your artist.

What the deposit covers

The deposit is a hold on the artist's time. When you book a session, the artist blocks out three or six or eight hours that they could otherwise sell to someone else. They also spend time before the appointment drawing your custom design — sometimes hours of unpaid work. The deposit pays for that drawing time and protects them if you no-show.

Why it is non-refundable

A refundable deposit is not a deposit — it is a Venmo loan. If you change your mind two days before a six-hour session, the artist cannot fill that slot, and they have already drawn the piece. Non-refundable is the only structure that aligns incentives so they can take you seriously as a booking.

⚖️

A fair artist will apply the deposit to your final session, not keep it as a separate fee. Always confirm this in writing when you book.

Rescheduling — the unwritten rule

Most studios will let you reschedule once, with enough notice (usually 48–72 hours), without losing your deposit. A second reschedule is when goodwill starts to expire. Plan around the appointment as if it were a flight — once it is booked, treat it as a fixed point.

When you can ask for a refund

  • The artist no-shows or cancels without rescheduling
  • The design they bring is unrecognizable from what you discussed and they refuse to revise
  • The studio violates a hygiene standard (rare, but valid)

Outside of those, the deposit stays with the artist. State consumer law varies, but the industry norm is firm.

Booking etiquette in 2026

  • Send a clear reference (or several), not just "something cool"
  • Mention size and placement upfront
  • Be honest about your budget — see our pricing guide
  • Reply to artist messages within a day; ghosting is the fastest way to get blacklisted
  • On the day: arrive on time, fed, hydrated, and not hungover

When the artist ghosts you

It happens. Independent artists are juggling dozens of inquiries and sometimes messages slip. Wait a week, send one polite follow-up, and if nothing — move on to a different artist. Do not assume malice; assume capacity. Then book with someone responsive.
