A tattoo session is a physical event. Your body burns calories, your nervous system runs hot, and your blood sugar drops faster than you expect. Eating the right things before — and the wrong things — has measurable effects on the experience.
The 24 hours before
You want to arrive well-fueled, not stuffed and not hungry. Aim for normal meals the day before, with a slight emphasis on:
- Complex carbs (whole grains, oats, sweet potato) — slow-release energy
- Lean protein (chicken, fish, beans) — keeps blood sugar steady
- Iron-rich foods (spinach, red meat, lentils) — supports bleeding recovery
- Vitamin C foods (citrus, berries, peppers) — collagen + healing
- Plenty of water — start hydrating 24 hours out
What to skip the day before
- Alcohol — thins blood, dehydrates, makes you bleed more
- Excessive caffeine — speeds heart rate, makes skin twitchier
- Heavy salt — dehydrates the skin, which holds ink worse
- Sushi or raw foods — small infection risk if anything goes sideways
- Anything that disagrees with you — a stomach issue mid-session is the worst
The morning of
Eat 1–2 hours before, not right before. Good options:
- Oatmeal with banana and peanut butter
- Eggs and toast
- Chicken and rice (heavy but stable)
- A balanced breakfast bowl — grain, protein, vegetable
Bring a banana, a granola bar, and a sugary drink to the session. Even a 3-hour sit will dip your blood sugar — having quick fuel handy keeps the room from spinning.
During the session
Sip water throughout. Eat small snacks during breaks every 60–90 minutes. Sugary drinks (juice, Gatorade) help if you start feeling light-headed. Resist the urge to skip food because you are nervous — that nervousness compounds with low blood sugar.
Hydration math
A simple rule: aim for half your body weight in ounces of water per day, starting 48 hours before. A 160 lb person drinks ~80 oz/day. It sounds like a lot — split into 8 cups of 10oz throughout the day, it is manageable. Skin elasticity, ink retention, and recovery all benefit.
Special cases
- Diabetic? Talk to your artist beforehand about scheduling around blood sugar
- Vegan/vegetarian? Same rules apply — focus on iron and protein
- On any blood thinners? Mention them at booking — some pieces may need to be rescheduled
- Pregnant? Most studios will not tattoo you. Wait until after
